Abstract: Digitization of a selection of oil and gas well pad sites in the Piceance region of Western Colorado. A random sample of 146 pad locations from the "Digitized Piceance Oil and Gas Pads of Western Colorado, 2015" were used to identify the locations digitized in this dataset. The 146 polygons spatially intersect polygons in the 2015 shape file, but are not completely contained within the 2015 polygons. Well pad sites were delineated using a modified version of the Rapid Land Cover Mapping protocol (Preston and Kim, 2016). The base imagery used to delineate boundaries is the 2005 National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) imagery.
Supplemenatal Information: Preston, Todd M, and Kevin Kim. 2016. “Land Cover Changes Associated with Recent Energy Development in the Williston Basin; Northern Great Plains , USA.” Science of the Total Environment 566-567. Elsevier B.V.: 1511–18. doi:10.1016/j.scitotenv.2016.06.038.
Purpose: The purpose of this dataset is to capture a selection of well pad areas in 2005 based on a random sample of locations from the 2015 dataset for comparative purposes. The digitized pads provide a limited snapshot in time of the footprint for selection of oil and gas development pad sites in the Piceance region of Western Colorado.

Processing Steps
Step 1 Process Description: A modified version of the Rapid Land Cover Mapping protocol described in Preston and Kim (2016) is used. A dot point grid with 5m spacing is generated covering the area of interest. The grid is masked to a radius of 250m around the center coordinate locations of well pads identified in 2015 NAIP imagery. The masked dot point grid is overlaid on NAIP imagery and the analyst selects all points that overlap the visual well pad. Selected points are aggregated to approximate the polygonal shape of the well pad.
