Description:
Abstract:
The depth to top of the Wilcox Group is contoured from location and top information derived from the Petroleum Information (PI) Wells database. The depth to Wilcox map represents the tops found in the database with the addition of surface geology from USGS maps and field data. The veracity of the PI Wells database is being checked by comparison to published cross sections and geologic maps.

Interpretation of the depth to Wilcox and apparent thickness maps along with published measured sections and cross sections indicates that portions of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama contain broad areas where a 20 to 40 foot net thickness of lignite and coal occur at shallow depths. The thicker coal zones are attributed to growth faulting or rift zones influencing peat deposition. The depth to Wilcox map shows several areas where dome-like uplifts and bench-like coal-bearing rock are buried to depths less than 5,000 ft.

Purpose:
Strong economic controls on the viability of coalbed methane (CBM) prospects makes coal geometry and coal property maps key elements in identifying sweet spots and production fairways. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the apparent prospective areas for CBM exploration in the Wilcox Group (Paleocene-Eocene) lignite and coal beds by mapping net coal thickness, depth to coal, and coal rank (vitrinite reflectance). Economic factors are not considered in this CBM prospects study. Given the comparatively extensive gas pipeline and other production infrastructure development in the Gulf Coast Region, these factors seem less a control compared to other areas. However, open leasable public lands are minimal or non-existent in the Gulf Coast region and access to the CBM prospects could be a problem.

Vitrinite reflectance data for the Wilcox Group is sparse. Searches of the AGI Georef, USGS Organic Geochemistry, Pennsylvania State University coal library, and State Geological Survey publications as well as other web data sources has turned up mostly information on shallow, mineable coals. Data from the deeper Wilcox group will mostly require new measurements of vitrinite reflectance from core and cutting samples.

What is known about rank is that shallow occurrences of the Wilcox "lignite" ranging in depth from outcrop to <4,000 ft, locally reach a maturity equal to bituminous coal. This rank level is an important benchmark for CBM prospects because it marks the onset of thermogenic gas generation.

In conclusion, the data indicate that CBM prospects for the Gulf Coast are better in South Texas (Webb, Dimmitt, LaSalle, and Frio counties) because the coal rank is anomalously high there and the coals occur at shallow depths over an extensive area. There are also local structures and apparent stratigraphic traps in this area that make attractive drilling targets. Finally, these higher rank southern Texas Wilcox coals are also plumbed to an apparently very thick section of Wilcox to the east that is mature with respect to gas generation and could provide significant thermogenic gas to these targets.

Logical_Consistency_Report:
The accuracy of the depth contours depends upon the accuracy of the oil and gas well information in the 2000 version of the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data. For the Preliminary Gulf Coast Coalbed Methane Exploration Maps, the assumption was made that the data in PI/Dwights PLUS were of sufficient accuracy for a regional-scale analysis.
Completeness_Report:
The contours were created using the 2000 well data in the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS database. The PI/Dwights PLUS Well Data contains over 2.5 million wells, while not a complete tabulation, it is the most complete digital well database available for the United States. 33,027 of these wells penetrated the Wilcox Group in the Gulf Coast and were used to create the apparent depth to the Wilcox Group map.

Process_Description:
The apparent depth map to the top of the Wilcox Group represents a surface generated using Dynamic Graphics' EarthVision (EV) modeling software (v. 5). Data were selected from the IHS Energy Group, PI/Dwights PLUS database for wells that penetrated the Wilcox in the Gulf Coast Region. The depth data were imported into EarthVision as a scattered data file. The wells scattered data were projected from decimal degrees to Albers meters using the Coordinate Transformation utility. The scattered data were gridded using a grid cell spacing of 500 m and using a proprietary minimum tension gridding algorithm. The map was plotted in EV with a contour interval of 500 ft. This file is the result of creating a contour output file in the plot routine in Earth Vision. The contour output file was then run through the ISMARC program that converted the contour output file into an Arc/Info GENERATE file. The Arc/Info GENERATE file is then converted to a polygon coverage in Arc/info by using an AML (Arc Macro Language) program from the Illinois State Geological Survey. The coverage used to clip the contours was the polygon coverage consisting of the Wilcox outcrop and a 20-mi buffer beyond subsurface well data.

The AML program from the Illinois State Geological Survey, "convert-ism", assigns a value to the item DEPTH by taking one-half the contour interval and adding it to the minimum contour that defines a polygon. For example, if the contour interval is 100, and a polygon is bounded by the 100 and 200 contour lines, then the DEPTH value assigned to that polygon is 150.

The polygon coverage was projected to geographic, DD, NAD 83. The polygon attributes for depth to the top of the Wilcox Group range from 0 - 16,750 ft.

Lines from this file were used to create wlcxdptlg in order to label select contour lines.
